This is the first installment of a series I’m working on this year. Find out more about these sessions and how to apply here! We ventured to Joshua Tree National Park for Nicole and Ryan’s desert engagement session. The huge, painted boulders and whimsical Joshua Trees dot the landscape of the vast desert. We stayed past sunset for starlit photos and could not deny the mystic energy of the preserved land.
I met Nicole in law school and instantly knew I liked her. We were in the same section our first year, and for the first trimester, I don’t think we spoke. To be honest, I was a little intimidated by her gorgeous hair, clear intelligence, and subtly southern charm. By the second trimester, I had to ask where she gets her hair cut, because I just love her layers. Sharing a love of cats, acai bowls, hipster eateries, and yoga, Nicole and I became fast friends, and hung out outside of law school where we had an unspoken, Fight Club-esq pact, we never talk about law school.
I have to admit that my first year of law school was probably the most difficult time I’ve ever had on a personal growth level. At a school were 33% of the class gets cut in their first year, competition was fierce, on top of that, I was adjusting to life in SoCal, which felt like a completely different world from Seattle, and I was maid of honor for a childhood friend from back home. Needless to say, I was quite anxious and the people that meet me and stuck around after that first year are true keepers!
After graduation, the real work began and Nicole and I were study buddies for the California Bar. We spent 8-12 hour days together studying (and daydreaming about all the things we would rather be doing). After passing the bar I moved to San Francisco for my firm and our contact was reduced to weekend visits, texts, and emails. Despite never really being phone gals, our visits still feel like we haven’t missed a beat.
Ryan came into Nicole’s life shortly after I left. Knowing that Nicole has (rightfully) put him through his paces, I have a ton of respect and admiration for Ryan. I’ve only had a few prolonged visits with the two of them, but I know that he looks out for her, that he loves her enough to indulge her harmless BS, and that he’s capable of standing up for himself when he needs to. I’ve had a lot of friends get married in the last ten years, and there are only a couple left that I’m really, really excited about, (you know who you are L+A) Nicole and Ryan are easily on that short list! To say I’m thrilled to attend in October is an understatement! I’ll see you both in Texas!
