“It seems as though I have lived this life always…I surely have hunted and foraged, and fought all the days of my life. And you, too, seem a part of it. You are…my woman, my mate.”– Jack London, The Sea Wolf.
Jack London’s maritime novel The Sea Wolf is full of adventure and personal growth from the unfortunate characters that find themselves aboard the shipping vessel with Wolf Larsen. From the cruelty of Captain Larsen’s methods, the characters find their own inner strength to escape his clutches and to survive on a completely deserted island. The characters, create a livable situation for themselves on the island, instead of venturing out to rejoin civilization, as they become resolved and content to just be alone together.
While eventually, they make their way back to society due to intervening forces, the decision they made to stay together, alone inspired the concept behind this real, destination pre-wedding shoot at Lanikai Beach, Hawaii.
A pre-wedding shoot is like a engagement shoot amplified! It’s longer in duration and has more production behind creating the scene. Pre-wedding shoots are best for destination weddings, or where the couple wants to travel to a location to incorporate into their wedding story, while the wedding may take place somewhere else.
Chris and Alicia meet at work in San Diego. Shortly after they began their courtship, Chris was stationed in different places as part of his tenure with the Marines. Their long distance romance flourished despite being separated and Alicia focusing on nursing school. Just before their wedding in May of this year, Alicia graduated nursing school and passed her licensing exam while Chris has returned home. We chose this theme for the shoot because the two have been through huge life events that have strengthened their inner resolve and their bonds together. In spite of spending much of their relationship physically apart, it seems only natural for them to be together, as if it has been so all along. This shoot is the embodiment of what their life might look like if they were to be deserted alone on a remote island.
As a real engagement session, it was important to incorporate some truly personal details of the couple. Chris and Alicia, each brought photographs from each of their parents’ wedding day to honor their roots. Ruby and diamond jewelry was passed down from Alicia’s Grandmother, along with a pocket watch for Chris. Chris and Alicia also wrote love letters to each other to commemorate the occasion privately- sealed in a bottle, and tossed into the sea.
