Last week, I started sharing the wedding of two of my dearest clients who have become close friends. This is Part 3 of 4 of Sohail and Ilma’s Muslim wedding. You can find Part 1 and Part 2 here. I have been dedicating each post to the significant factors I saw in their wedding that have inspired me in my own life, and today’s post dedicated to #Sohailma.
After a bright and lively evening at Chandni (see Part 2), #Sohailma opted for a modern and elegant setting with a San Francisco Design Center wedding reception for their third evening of festivities. The space was easily large enough for their 250 guests, with space for an open dry bar, and two buffet stations. Like #Sohailma, the San Francisco Design Center was sleek, contemporary, and thoughtfully accommodated their many guests with ease and convenience.
Their Valima combined both traditional and non-traditional elements. Bathed in a spotlight, Sohail and Ilma enjoyed a first dance after greeting each other on the dance floor. Speeches by friends were kicked off with a sehra from a family matron. The night concluded after a bittersweet round of the shoe game. The evening was truly a tasteful combination of new and old. With all the love from family and friends, and despite moving just several miles away, it was difficult to not weep during the send off.
To me, #Sohilma isn’t just a clever hashtag for all things Sohail and Ilma, it’s their couple philosophy. It’s about balancing each others ideas and wants, not just compromising where one person loses some of the time. While I was thoroughly impressed with Sohail’s involvement in the wedding planning, neither Sohail or Ilma thought it was unordinary for him to be a major player in planning the wedding because it was equally important to him as well. Together, they created a beautiful evening that honored themselves, their families, and their friends.
Like their hashtag, these two are strongly complimentary and work together seamlessly, without losing any part of their individual identity.
