It’s always a special treat to work with my close friends and family for their very special occasions. This is a big year in terms of milestones for people dear to me. I met Sandra four years ago during my time volunteering with the Boys & Girls Club of San Francisco. She is a constant ray of light in any environment. She has a special way of working with difficult kids while maintaining their respect and gaining their confidence. I’ve always admired her positivity. Needless to say, I am thrilled to be photographing her wedding in October, starting with her San Francisco engagement photo session.Mario and Sandra are high school sweethearts who know how to balance fun and romance with serious co-decision making. They love to travel abroad as much as they love exploring our local metropolis of San Francisco. With the sweeping scenes of our distinctive skyline, it’s easy to fall in love while admiring the view. With many date nights ending with city gazing, it was only fitting to incorporate Sandra and Mario’s favorite vantage points in their engagement session.
We started at the Cupid’s Span on the Embarcadero. For potentially crowded locations, I always recommend shooting during non-peak hours, like a weekday during work hours, to keep the session moving and free of people walking through. Shortly after, we made a brief stop at Twin Peaks where Sandra and Mario would spend many evenings admiring the twinkling lights of the City, essentially, the city dwellers version of stargazing.
I love the way Mario and Sandra coordinated their outfits to each other while maintaining their individual styles. Mario has a great sense of men’s street wear, but definitely knows how to look dapper with a subtle flair. Check out his awesome blue suede shoes, bowtie and blue blazer below. Love it! Sandra’s bubbly personality comes through with her bouncy black dress and her flowing sundress. Their outfits are coordinated, but don’t match, which is a clear metaphor for why their relationship has been so strong for over a decade–they work well together, while still keeping their personal identities. No collection of San Francisco views would be complete without one of my favorite vantage points from Potrero Hill. If you’ve ever driven into San Francisco via 101-N, you’re familiar with a bend in the freeway as you approach the City that gives way to the tall clusters of buildings in an almost dreamlike way. This view is essentially the scene that unfolds as you arrive, it’s simply effervescent.
We ended the session at Treasure Island, which is quickly becoming one of my all time favorite locations. Despite normal heavy winds on a clear day, the unobstructed view of downtown and the Bay Bridge naturally lends itself to expansive wide photos. On a professional level, I’m loving all these photos. On a personal level, I treasured this experience and I’m anxiously awaiting the wedding to come!
